Schalke coach Roberto Di Matteo and
club sport director Horst Heldt Thursday defended the decision this
week to release players and suspend a third.
Midfielders Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam were Monday removed
from the Bundesliga club with immediate effect and defender Marco
Hoeger was suspended until and including Saturday.
"They were strong measures. The important thing now is to put all
personal interests aside," Di Matteo said.
Heldt said that following the sanctions he had seen in training that
the players were "concentrated and being attentive."
Sixth-placed Schalke are at home to second-last Paderborn Saturday
with Di Matteo's side fighting for a place in next season's Europa
League.
Schalke's "ultra" fans are planning to stay silent for the first half
of the match in protest following win in the last eight
games.
However Schalke can clinch a European berth in the event that they win their last
matches, with the home game against Paderborn followed by a trip
to relegation strugglers SV Hamburg on the final day of the season.
